Data Destruction Policy
ReGreenIT Data Destruction Policy and Methods
Policy.
We will not allow any data we collect from obsolete IT equipment to pass from our hands without physical destruction or by industry standard secure erasure.
Destruction.
The method we use is to physically shatter or destroy the hard drive platters by drilling or smashing them. This method is totally secure and irreversible.
Erasure.
We comply with leading industry standards for secure data erasure. The two main ones are US Dept of Defence Computer Hard Drive Disposition policy of 2001 and the Aust Government ICT Security Standard of 2014. These specify a 100% overwrite of the drive with a pattern or specific character. Whilst some say a multi-pass method is needed our research suggests that according to NSA’s (USA) Disk Drive Data Sanitization document of 2006 a single pass overwrite gives unsurpassable security.
Erasure Tools.
We use a variety of tools depending on the re-use intent of the sanitized hard drive. For example we use Microsoft’s Diskpart tool wherein “Every byte/sector on the disk is set to zero and on MBR disks the partitioning and hidden sector information is overwritten. On GPT disks the partitioning information including the MBR are zeroed out”
Certification.
We provide a data destruction certificate, if requested, listing all collected E-waste capable of storing customer data by serial number together with a disposition statement indicating if the data was destroyed physically or securely erased.
Physical Security.
All collected e-waste is stored on locked premises protected by electronic measures such as alarm system and video surveillance/recording equipment.
